Charity Quilting

This fun quilt was pieced by Julie.
I made this simple quilt using leftovers from quilt backings and other projects. I am really pleased with how this one came out. Both quilts will go to Annapolis Quilts for Kids for binding and eventually distributed to children in need.

Brown Bag Mystery

When I saw that Kelly at The Scrappy Apple was participating in the the 2023 Brown Bag Mystery I had to jump in. I looked at their selection of fabrics and grabbed this fun Halloween print. Mystery quilts are always an adventure. Follow along as I work through this mystery beginning in March. There are many quilt shops participating in the event so do some searching around and support small business.

Scrappy Bricks

Time for another scrappy bricks project. This time, I decided to go big! The center squares are cut at 4.5" by 4.5" and the bricks are cut at 2.5" by 4.5". This is a great way to use up a bunch of 2.5" strips. Particularly if you're like me and have like a million of them.
First I made this one. Each block measures 12.5" by 12.5" and finishes at 12" by 12" in the finished quilt. Only nine blocks make a great baby quilt that measures about 36" by 36".
Then this one. I love scrappy quilts. Both of these will get quilted up for charity. This block can be made using just two dies from the Accuquilt Go 8 Inch Qube. If cutting with your ruler, you can get eight bricks from a single width-of-fabric 2.5" strip. It would make a great swap project, too.

Accuquilt Go! - This is the basic kit that I started with. The cutter, one die, and mat.
Accuquilt Ready. Set. Go! - New to Accuquilt and ready to jump into the Accuquilt Go! with both feet? This is the set for you. It includes the 8 Inch Qube and a strip cutter.

Random Qube Blocks

After piecing the quilt backing, it was time to load this fun quilt onto the frame.
I used a fun quilting design that has become one of my favorites. If I remember to look it up I will share the designer. Yesterday I trimmed it and added it to my pile of quilts waiting for binding. That pile is now five quilts deep. I should start another random quilt soon.

Piecied Quilt Backings

While there is no wrong way to make a quilt, I have some tips to help making piece quilt backings easier. I pieced this backing using several lengths and widths of fabrics. The green floral was yardage, the grayish green was yardage, the turquoise was a leftover piece of wide backing, and the dark blue was also leftover wide backing fabric. The grayish green and the dark blue were not long enough so I had to piece them. When I do this, tear the fabric so I get nice straight pieces of fabric. I use a wide (5/8") seam allowance. All of those long seams are along the length of the fabrics. Meaning it has the least amount of stretch in that direction.
How do you know if you have enough backing for your quilt top? You could lay it out and layer the top and backing, but I find it easier to fold the backing into quarters. First fold in half length-wise, then in half again width-wise.
Do the same with your quilt top and put the top over the backing with the centers matching (that's the top right corner of this photo). As long as you have enough extra on the top and side, you should be good. I like about 6" extra on the sides and 3" for the top and bottom. This one is just right. Time to get it loaded onto the long arm frame and quilted.

This fun scrappy quilt was pieced by Julie.
I pieced this quilt using my Accuquilt Go! die cutting system. You can learn more about The Accuquilt Go! 8" Qube in this blog post from December 2022

Kawaii Kitties

I was enamored with this drawing workbook called Kawaii Kitties. I couldn't resist.
I have slowly been working through the tutorials.

I've had some fun drawing little kitties.

They are delightful!

How fun is this little guy?

They may not qualify as grand art but they make me happy.

Random Qube Blocks

Sometimes I go a little crazy. This is the stack of sashings and corner blocks I cut to put together my Random Qube Block quilt. The sashings were cut from the leftovers from another quilt's backing fabric. I used almost every scrap of that fabric.
Here it is with all those sashings and cornerstones. I'm super pleased with how it turned out. Now I just have to pick out another border fabric and find some backing fabric.

Diabolical Jane

I finished the Diabolical Jane quilt top in June 2021. I picked this great pink for the quilting.
Mostly because it coordinated with the quilt top and the backing.
I loaded it onto the frame.
I used this great all-over quilting design called Lace Agate Meander by Bethanne Nemesh. Her quilting is so inspiring. (Yes, that photo is blurry. Dreary winter days do not make for good lighting or photos.)
The backing fabric is delightfully colorful.
Now it can go in the stack of quilts waiting for binding.
