Charity Quilting

Saturday I dropped off a stack of quilts ready for binding and picked up a bag full of finished tops and a roll of batting. Then, I got back to quilting.
I pieced both of these and now they are ready to go back to  Annapolis Quilts for Kids. I have so many more to quilt. It's going to be a great month!

Cranky Socks

It was time for another pair of Monster Socks. The way to know if they are matching is by looking at the cuffs, heels, and toes. These turned out great! Someday I will open my Etsy shop and sell some more of these. Maybe in the fall. They do make great winter holiday gifts.

Double Wedding Ring

I continue to cut and layout pieces for my double wedding ring quilt. I've only made a couple pieced arcs. They aren't perfect but that is the sewist, not the templates. I will get it sorted out before assembly. Overall, this is a great project. Slow and great.
I pieced a bunch of arcs. These are potato chip sewing. The kind of thing you can't have just one of.
I will keep cutting and hanging these pieces on my design wall. I'm not sure how big the finished quilt will be but I love where it is going. Have you made a double wedding ring quilt?

Make May Modern

Last Saturday the Baltimore Modern Quilt Guild held their Make May Modern one day retreat. I didn't attend in person but they encouraged everyone to make a tote using the Ruby Star Society Reusable Shopping Tote pattern (free). Since I didn't attend I decided to at least sew along with part of my day and make the tote. This fabric has been in my collection for more than five years. I'm pretty sure it came to me as a mystery box of quilting cottons from Craftsy. Large prints almost always become totes or bags because I don't have much luck cutting them up for quilts.
This little pattern has you measure for your cutting lines. I used my Creative Grids Circle Savvy 11-3/4in x 18-1/2in Quilt Ruler to cut the curves. I use the Fiskars Stick Rotary Cutter, 28mm to cut those arcs.
I cut the pocket a little bigger than the pattern asked for.
I used the serger to tidy up the straps before folding and top stitching. This pattern uses French seams but doesn't make it sound complicated.
It does fold into the pocket. Not that it I managed to fold it to look pretty. Usually I fold my totes so they are tidy but this is the first time I've made one with a pocket specifically for the task.
Overall this was a great afternoon project. I don't think this bag will become my go-to bag as it does have some waste. I might use some of the techniques on other simple totes, though. It does have a very professional finish.

Charity Quilting

Some days I need a quick and easy project. This little quilt was just the ticket.
Six-inch blocks combined with a narrow border and a wide border make for a quick finish. I pieced and quilted this charity quilt in a single day. This one will join the rest headed back to Annapolis Quilts for Kids.

Double Wedding Ring

Like many quilters I aspire to make wonderful quilts. Also, I like quilt rulers and templates. I picked up the double wedding ring and large melon templates to go with my copy of Double Wedding Ring Quilts book from Victoria Findlay Wolfe.
I pulled a stack of fabrics I think will work and started cutting.
I don't have a grand plan right now. This will be long-term project where I cut some pieces, sew some pieces, and look at the design wall to see how it is coming together. One of the exciting parts is that the little wedges that make up the arcs can be cut from some pretty small scraps. The design wall will be busy for a while.

Promness

Eighteen embroidered, organza butterflies.
Two rose motifs.
One layer of navy chiffon behind one layer of butterfly tulle.
I placed the flower motifs but repositioned over the shoulder seams.
The cape from the back.
The vest from the front.

None of this is as important as how it made the prom-goer feel. The report from Friday night was that they positively glowed. Which is the goal of prom. A night to make you feel special and ethereal. I'm glad I was part of this journey. It was a pleasure to take a hand drawn design and create a final garment that made them feel special.

Charity Quilting

While searching for a paper pattern I found this little quilt top. I'm fairly certain I pieced it when I lived in New York state. I left New York in 2005. I decided it was time to finish it.
I found some coordinating backing, loaded it up and got quilting. It's great to finish something that has been waiting so long.

What Makes Prom

I had to break out another sewing machine to make the button holes. If you can, go for the machine that does a one-step buttonhole (my Pfaff makes a nice one). It is so much easier to do than a four-step.
I ordered some organza butterflies from Amazon to add to the butterfly tulle.
I added them to the bottom third of the tulle fabric. I like the added density. I don't think one can have too many butterflies. I'm not adding them, either.
